Small changes. Big impact. How care workers can support vulnerable clients with smarter, safer energy use.
As energy prices continue to put pressure on household budgets, many older adults and vulnerable clients are quietly struggling to stay warm, comfortable, and in control of their finances. Often, they don’t know where energy is being wasted or how to make changes. That’s where you come in.
As a homecarer, you have a unique opportunity to make a real difference. During your visits, you can gently suggest, guide, or even adjust small things around the home that lead to big savings — without compromising on health or comfort.
Your Energy Saving Checklist
- Check for Drafts and Block Them
Look out for cold air coming through windows and doors. A rolled-up towel, cushion, or low-cost draft excluder can work wonders — especially in older homes. - Close Curtains at Dusk
Encourage clients to draw curtains as soon as it starts getting dark. This helps trap heat inside and stops the chill settling in overnight. - Keep Thermostat Sensible (18–21°C)
If the heating is on full blast or barely working, check the thermostat and suggest a balanced setting. Many clients don’t realise how small changes can help bills. - Layer Up, Not Just Heat Up
Gently encourage clients to wear cardigans, slippers, or thermals rather than reaching straight for the dial. Comfort and warmth go hand in hand. - Turn Off Standby Appliances
TVs, radios, and other appliances left on standby still use energy. With permission, help switch them off at the wall when not in use. - Use the Kettle Wisely
Many people boil a full kettle every time. Suggest just boiling what’s needed — especially for regular cuppas. - Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Bulbs
If you spot old-style halogen bulbs, mention it to family or make a note. LEDs use up to 90% less energy and last longer too. - Shorter Showers Beat Baths
Where safe and possible, suggest swapping a daily bath for a short shower. It’s easier, quicker, and uses less hot water. - Fridge and Freezer Door Checks
Make sure seals are intact and doors close properly. Left open even for a short while, they can spike energy use. - Washing Machine Awareness
Avoid washing half-loads or running 60° washes unnecessarily. A 30°C wash is usually fine — and much cheaper. - Heating Timer Smartness
Ask the family if they’ve set a timer on the boiler or heating. Many older clients forget to turn the heating off or on consistently. - Let the Sunshine In
In the warmer months, make the most of natural light by opening curtains in the day and switching off unnecessary lamps. - Identify ‘Always-On’ Devices
Spot appliances that run constantly — like portable heaters or dehumidifiers. Ask if they’re still needed or if a timer could help. - Raise It with Families
If you notice energy problems or hazards — like high bills, cold rooms, or faulty appliances — let relatives or key contacts know. They may be able to take action. - Be an Energy Educator
Many clients simply don’t know which appliances cost the most to run. Explain gently, in easy terms, and always with kindness.
A Small Act of Care, A Big Step Forward
Saving energy isn’t just about reducing bills — it’s about protecting comfort, dignity, and independence. Vulnerable people often won’t ask for help or may not even realise they’re struggling. That’s why your presence, your insight, and your care matter more than ever.
“As carers, we do more than look after people — we help them live better, safer, and stronger every single day. Energy awareness is just another way we empower lives.” — Kate, Director at CareStaff24
